Security Checklist

Here are some handy hints and tips to make you more secure online.
1. Upgrade your operating system
The latest system has the latest protection against the latest security threats. You can set-up your PC (or Mac) to get updates automatically via the internet. It's a very easy way to keep the hackers at bay.
2. Use a firewall
Your PC's very own burglar alarm, it not only alerts you to potential 'intruders', it actually stops them. Learn more about firewalls.
3. Use anti-virus software
Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date and you help stop viruses, trojans and many other nasty 'bugs' from infecting your PC. Find out more about anti-virus software.
4. Stay up to date
You should always back up your PC regularly (on a memory stick, another hard drive or on CD for example) so if the worst did happen and you lost all your data, you could reinstall it.
5. Prevent spyware
Spyware is a rather nasty form of online snooping. You can help prevent spyware from getting onto your computer by surfing with caution and using up-to-date anti-spyware software. Learn more about spyware.
6. Secure your wireless connection
Without a secure wireless network, anyone can use your connection. So not only are they freeloading at your expense, they're also able to hack into your PC. Almost all wireless networks come with encryption capabilities to stop this happening - make sure you set yours up, or get someone to do it for you.
7. Filter our unwanted spam email
We've all received junk mail or spam. At best, it's annoying. At worst, it can seriously compromise your online security. So make sure you activate your email program's spam filter and ask your internet provider about their own filters. Find out more about email scams.
8. Surf safely
Always use the latest version of your web browser (eg. Explorer, Firefox or Safari). Be careful about which sites you visit. And never provide personal details online unless you are sure the site is using an up-to-date security certificate.
