Protecting you through technology and people

Our online banking systems are among the most sophisticated in the world.  And so are our security measures.  Here are just some of the ways technology is protecting you.

Firewall protection

Think of a firewall as a very high security barrier around our systems - and your data.  It detects any attempts at unauthorised entry - and simply locks them out.  Learn more about firewalls.

Security certificates

Any page of the Bank of Scotland website that contains sensitive information is protected by a technology known as SSL.   This stands for Secure Sockets Layer encryption - essentially a scrambling device that ensures private information cannot be deleted when it passes from your PC to ours.  You can tell if you are on an SSL page when you see a yellow padlock on the screen.

Secure sign-in

Our online banking service is only available to customers who have registered their details with us.  Every time you sign in, you must enter your username, password and the answer to a 'memorable question' before you can access your accounts.

Time-out

After ten minutes of inactivity within online banking, you are automatically signed out.  So if you've popped out for a cup of tea - and forgotten to sign out - no-one will be able to access your accounts in your absence.  To continue banking online on your return, simply sign in again.  It's good practice to get into the habit of always signing out if you are leaving your PC unattended to prevent unauthorised access.

Protecting you through people

Our dedicated security teams analyse and monitor online transactions, 24 hours a day.  If there's anything suspicious, we're the first to know about it.
