The FTSE 100 (Financial Times Stock Exchange) is a list of the top 100 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange based on their total share value. The value of company shares fluctuates throughout the day dependng on a wide range of circumstances. These movements occur naturally as the shares are traded thoughout the day but sometimes a significant change in price might occur as the result of a takeover, the announcement of particularly good or bad company performance or a merger. Share holders are also entitled to benefits such as voting rights in company decisions and dividends on shares held.
